Work Session -9/14/2011

Today's project for Bill is the foundation for the signal light and he brought fourteen 80 lb.bags of ready-mix concrete which still have to be unloaded from his van. Bill bent the loops at home and wired the reinforcing cage together up on one of the steaming bays.
Wally Pausch is helping along with Lew Fowler as we check the depth of the hole to decide if we need to dig a little deeper. Bill made a wood template to hold the four 3/4 inch diameter anchor bolts in proper position in the concrete.
Wally mixing up a batch of concrete in a wheelbarrow which will be often repeated as bag after bag was mixed and placed in the hole. A view of the hole with the reinforcing cage in place.
The first few shovel loads of concrete are placed by Wally as Lew uses his foot to steady the reinforcing cage in place. A view looking in showing the concrete in the bottom of the hole and the cage centered in it.
Wally dumping the last shovelful of this batch as Edith Hacker starts to mix another batch with Lew watching. Wally making sure he places concrete to the sides of the reinforcing cage and not just the center.
A view of the foundation hole almost full and the cage almost buried in concrete as we mix up another batch. A form for leveling the anchor bolts was set across the hole and leveled and the bolts then pressed into the concrete and checked for level again.
While we were working on the foundation, Rick Nagy and Dick Clark were fastening the rails down to the ties to complete the closure of the siding rail to the switch. As soon as the photographer got there the guys had to take a break and admire their handiwork.
Rick adding ties under the rail splices at the end of the switch. A close-up view of Rick using a tie lifter as Dick drives the screw to fasten the rail.
With teamwork, they keep working across the end of the switch and the task will soon be completed. Rick adding a new tie at the opposite end of the switch as he drives it into position.
Back at the station I found that Jerry Bell had taken the time to make labels for all the drawers and doors of which only a few are shown in this picture. Today we are celebrating Jerry Bell's birthday with Kitty Shriver and Robbi Haines lighting the candles on his birthday cake as Jerry watches along with Lew Fowler.
With a huff and a puff he blew his candles out. Rex Shriver, Edith, Rick, Kitty, Robbi, Jerry, Lew, Bill Besselman, Dick and the photographer, Bill, were in attendance to celebrate Jerry's birthday.
