Work Session - 9/18/13

Our interesting track work at Zip Junction with the diagonal track across the middle of the photo being for Short with the switches providing us ways to divert traffic in case a section of track has to be closed down. We are replacing aluminum rail with steel rail on our eastbound mainline near Mackey's Run with Frank Foti shown here fastening the rail down.
Ken Brooks is flattening out the old aluminum rail clips before we put the steel rail in place. Ken continuing with the flattening of the aluminum rail clips so we can position the steel rail for fastening down through the clips with screws.
Frank positions the last steel rail to make the connection that we cut to check for the length as John Koontz watches. Ken looks over the remaining rail as Frank files the end of the cut steel rail so that it will slide into the steel rail joiner easier, as John waits.
After replacing the outside rail with steel rail where all the wear occurs on this curve, Dick Clark uses a levels up the track before we tamp it with the tamping rods. Dick continues working towards us leveling the rail as Frank checks the radius of the bend in the steel rail before placement.
With the rail section bent and joined to connect to the rails, the rail gauges have been put in place and Frank drives the screws down to hold the steel rail in place. Ken and John pick up the replaced aluminum rail and load the train as Dick continues down through our work area leveling the track.
