Work Session - 9/25/13

This is one of the signal block release posts, this one happens to be at Pandora, that will get one of the newer larger reflectors because a few of the guys seem to be missing them and not clearing the block signal. Up at the work shed the crew were working on our ballast Hopper as one of the welds broke loose on one end of the bolster channel.
When constructed, the back of the channel was cut back to sit flush with the side support frame and they were trying to stick weld it with a small buzz box they had. It looks as though they're not getting enough amperage to melt the steel and get a good puddle.
Frank Smoley and Bob Beardslee watch as George Metts tries to weld the bolster to the side frame and that's Ted Nyland in the shed building a switch. It doesn't look like there's enough heat for this weld and a bigger welder with more amperage will be needed.
That's George Metts under the welders helmet checking over the clamp that holds the welding rod. The track crew were laying out the radius for the curve coming off of the track at Gillette that will connect in with Frank's curve on the Branch Line.
The stake between the two trees is where the track will be routed from the switch I'm standing on to a sweeping curve into the Branch Line. Beyond the two trees, the stakes continue with the curve and we will need to backfill the right-a-way area to bring it up to track grade.
A view looking from the opposite direction from the plate girder bridge as the switch will be cut in the left-hand track in the upper left-hand corner of the picture. This switch as you come off the plate girder bridge will be removed and moved up near the lower right-hand side of the picture.
We were contemplating at one time to make a loop and tie in to the siding up at High Creek, but changed our plans and this switch is not needed here. The switch will be cut in the track in the foreground that head towards the illuminated mile marker which will have to be moved.
The right-a-way stakes show the debris field that will have to be cleared and you can just make out the switch up at Gillette in the extreme top left of the picture. The green electrical panel houses the relays for the block signals at this end of our layout. This is the switch already in place at Gillette that we will tie into with our new track.
