9.28.05 Work Session

George Woodling and Dick Clark placed a switch in position to replace the one that Jerry Bell replaced the points. They decided to replace both switches opposing each other.
Roger at the station, you can tell he hasn't worked hard enough if he has that much energy to lift his leg that high and where would an old railroad engineer be? Don Speidel at the coffee pot.
Dick Clark and George Woodling stand at Filmor where we will place fill for the track expansion and a new bridge. View showing both sides of the tracks and the metal stakes for centerline of new track.
Showing the right-a-way that requires fill to bring the track to proper grade. Today's first project is to add a siding at the station and George shows us how to lift a switch all by himself. He had his Wheaties!
Tom Reder and George preparing the roadbed to reposition the track. Tom using a mattock to remove the ballast so we can move the track sideways to gain space for another track.
Dick works with the positioning of the switch over existing rail. While Dick marks the track for cutting, Tom and George work on removing the ballast alongside of the track.
Dick checks rail alignment as Tom prepares roadbed for the switch as Joe Banzer and George move the track sideways. Looks like Dick has got the easy job.
Yup!, He's got the easy job as Tom widens the area for the new switch. George is going to move the track so that these two will be parallel with each other.
George applying finesse with a sledge hammer to move the track. Joe applying the ballast around the track bumper under the watchful eye of George.

With the switch in place and rail drilled for the rail joiners Frank Foti and Tom prepare to bolt the rail joiners together.

Because we took out two sections of track for use as siding track Bill added the ties for the rail pieces that we would have to add. The finished reworked track and siding all ballasted.
Looks good from this vantage point for an afternoons worth of work. George removing the buckets from the work train with Bob Beardslee carrying buckets in the background.
Meanwhile the crew working on the grade wall behind the switch shed had been busy backfilling at the base of the grade wall. View at the end of the yard where switches will be laid down for the yard expansion.

We have some dirt to move and we have just the place to put it...at Filmor. The wall does look good, hats off to Don Speidel and his crew for their work on that wall.

Don takes a break as Tom, Roger Harnish and Frank load the buckets of dirt on the train. That looks like all we can load on the train for this run.
Wonder what was said that Frank shies away from Dick with the drill in his hand as Tom laughs about it? Starting to dump the dirt for the right-a-away fill at Filmor.
We'll have to make a crossing for the double mainline tracks and create a bridge abutment here. The last stake will be at the opposite bridge abutment and the fill will have to raise the new track to meet existing.
Edith Hacker did a nice job of removing the dirt from around the roots of a fallen tree that encroached our right-a-away. Robbi, taught me that I have to be faster with my camera, with Frank driving and Roger behind. The first four photos at top were provided by Paul Emch
