Operating Rules and Regulations

Operating Rules

INTERNET VERSION

(LAST REVISION: summer 2002 )

This Internet version is for reference only. The official rules of operation for the Lake Shore Live Steamers and the GM&O RR can be obtained from the Safety Committee
Visiting engines are always welcome to operate on the GM&O (Glen Meadow and Orchard) Railroad. Please read the trackage rights
During most of our operating sessions we haul the public, and while not required to do so, visiting engineers are welcome to haul the public if they wish. Please notice our schedule for public runs
Since the public is so prominent in our operations, we have adopted many safety rules.

*** All trains must conform ! ***

Some of the rules you should be aware of before visiting are as follows:

Wheels / Gauges: All engines, locomotives and rolling stock shall be compatible to IBLS standards for all gauges.

Flexibility: Flexibility tests of trucks of unloaded rolling stock shall apply as follows:
                   1/4" for 7-1/2" gauge
                   1/8" for 4-3/4" and 3-1/2" gauge

Coupling: When operating on LSLS trackage all equipment which is coupled with functional couplers shall have safety chains attached adjacent to the couplers. Use of draw bars shall be permitted without safety chains. Draw bars shall not exceed one (1) foot in length.

Boilers: All operated steam locomotives shall have a current valid certificate issued by a Mini-Rail member club or a state issued certificate. Visiting locomotives without the certificate must have a boiler test conducted by a member of the LSLS boiler safety committee, which is valid only for the visit. (Advanced arrangements should be made if a test is required).

Spark Arrestors: All coal, wood or oil fired steam locomotives operated on LSLS trackage shall be equipped with smoke box screens or spark arrestors. When conditions permit exceptions may be made by the operations Safety Committee, Officers or Trustees. (This rule is generally suspended if the engine does not produce a great deal of sparks and conditions are not dry).

Brakes: Trains which are hauling nonmembers shall consist of not more than three (3) cars without active brakes. A non-riding caboose may be added.

Lights: When operating during periods of limited visibility or evenings, a headlight (white) must be shown to the front of the engine, and a marker (red) must be shown to the rear of the train.

Communications: Most members use two-way radios to communicate with their crew, other members and safety inspectors. We use either Motorola's (7) channel "FRS Band" radio or Midland's (14) channel "FRS Band" radio. Although a radio is not required to operate on the GM&O, it is highly recommended Radios are mainly used for safety, emergencies, and bi-directional operations.

Courtesy: General behavior and courtesy to others should reflect the clubs dedication to family values. Our public is very special to us.

Every locomotive that is to leave the steaming bays or the new yard must contact the Yardmaster before their departure.
